REVIEW
(1/5 STARS)
I have to admit I was pretty disappointed at this new season. There was no character development, no interesting storyline and not many laughable moments.
Season one was a thrill. Our main character was fighting depression and we could see how the people around him affected him and helped him get over the grief of losing his wife to cancer. Despite being a very raw and dark series, "After Life" managed to make us laugh at the most unexpected moments. I think that was its main idea, to learn how to laugh at the small, simple things. Tony was a great example of a depressed, bitter man who had no idea how to step away from the darkness in his life. The characters were very real and played a part in Tony's improvement while having their issues and separate stories. However, in season two, Tony went back to his old self-sabotaging self. He went back to being rude and bitter. He was still refusing to move on or, at least, to get some help. 'One step forward, two steps backwards' is the best way to describe this new chapter. The only characters I was interested in were Roxy and the Postman. The rest of them were just flat and had nothing to add on to the show. I couldn't connect to their stories nor their problems. No arc, no story, no nothing. This season was more about dirty jokes than the philosophical meaning of life. Ricky didn't want to tell a narrative anymore, but to shock people with his ability to create misogynistic characters - this was achieved mainly through the Psychiatrist. Besides the ludicrous stories this character told depicting women as sex toys, I couldn't help but feel frustrated how women in this season existed solely to run around men. Kath is obsessed with Matt; Jen clearly stated she loved her ex-husband more than her son; Emma desperately crawled after Tony... Every single one of them existed to serve a man. Nothing evolved, all stayed the same. It was like I was watching a show written by a five-year-old: joking about t*ts and d*cks is not enough anymore, especially when the bar was so high.
